This study main objective is to verify if there is a potential influence from Bolsa Família (financial aid to poor Brazilian families provided by the federal government) on the consumption of low-income individuals. To achieve this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted in order to verify if there have been alterations in the perceptions of individuals concerning the change of the social classes to which they belonged before receiving the grant by the Program, as to their purchasing power and the increase possibility in the quantity and quality of the products they consume. The behavioral change is preceded by alterations of perception, which justifies the approach of this study. The results demonstrate that the perception of individuals was modified not only as regards the change in the social class to which they belonged, but also in relation to the elevation of their purchasing power, quality and quantity of products they consume.
