Sustainable Development Goals in Marabá, Pará: A study on Praça da Criança

Abstract

The United Nations published in 2015 the 2030 Agenda, an action plan that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals, detailed in 169 targets. In SDG11, which deals with “Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, one of the approaches corresponds to improvements in the quality of life in cities through sustainable urbanization with universal access to safe, accessible and green public spaces, particularly for women, children, elderly and people with disabilities. Therefore, this article presents an analysis of a square located inside a roundabout, a Praça da Criança, in the city of Marabá-Pará, to exemplify some of the reasons that lead the city to have a low Sustainable Development Index of Brazilian Cities (IDSC-BR): Marabá had an IDSC-BR of 35.54, occupying the 5,461st place in the general classification, among the 5,570 Brazilian cities. For the preparation of this article, there were two distinct stages: Literature review, where theories, concepts and methodologies were investigated in a bibliographic survey based on established theorists; and Field data collection, in order to identify the contradictions of the public space with what the SDG11 requests.
