Abstract

This study aimed to compare the costs involved in operating systems and performance of manual and mechanical harvesting of sugar cane in the fields of Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, using Santal Amazon and Brastoft A-7700 cane harvesters models. A comparison of the operating income in cutting the sugar cane, between man and machine, was performed, identifying a better performance on the mechanical system because the harvester can work as 26 field workers per hour. It was found the huge divergence to the mechanical harvest system because your benefit is bigger than cost. By using the mechanical system, it can reach 31% superior gain than manual system, getting R$ 193,144.11 per year, considering 964.2 ha of area. Analyzing the data, in relation to the area harvested mechanically, which were only 6.65% of total area, it is possible to substitute the rest of the manual area to mechanical system in order to reach more gain.
