CHARACTERISITCS OF REACTION TIME SOFTWARES FOR MEASURING MOTOR RESPONSES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Reaction time (RT) is a simple measure that includes the time in milliseconds between the appearance of the stimulus and the beginning of a motor response. The RT is a sensitive variable that provides a refined investigation of neuropsychological functioning, being an important measure of assessment in health. This study analyzed the scientific production related to the use of RT software, specifically regarding to health research themes, identifying the types of software and characterizing the equipment employed to record the response and the proposed visual stimulus. The study was conducted based on ScienceDirect database of articles published from 2001 to 2011, combining the words “reaction time” and “computer” or “software”, which resulted in 78 articles. We investigated: software used, objective, sample, application area/speciallity, equipment used for response and visual stimulus. The most of research evaluated: the influence of gender (10%) and age (9%); cognitive function (8%); visual rehabilitation (6%); drivers (6%); facial recognition (6%); and the applicability of computerized tests in different populations (6%). Part of the studies (14%) applies software specifically developed for the study; among commercial softwares, there is a variety of manufacturers, with a slight predominance of the E-PRIME (10%), followed by Presentation® (5%), and other were found mostly in only one study. In relation to the hardware used used, there is a predominance of keyboard (40%), followed by the use of an external equipment (35%), mouse (18%), the touch-sensitive monitor (4%) and some unidentified (4%).
