Abstract

There is scientific evidence that the physical activity performed by the elderly related to healthy living habits provides an expectation of a better quality of life and contributes to delaying the effects of aging. Among these sports are surfing, which works on physical abilities, such as balance, and psychological variables, such as trust, besides allowing new interpersonal relationships. The objective of this study was to identify the subjective perception of the Quality of Life of the elderly practicing a surfing program. For this, a descriptive research of the exploratory type of qualitative character was carried out. Six elderly men and women aged between 60 and 75 years with active and physically independent status participated in this study. For data collection, the following instruments were used: Quality of Life Questionnaire, WHOQOL-Bref, WHOQOL-Old, Anamnesis Questionnaire and semi-structured individual interview. As for the analysis of data obtained by questionnairetype instruments, the specific guidelines of each instrument were used. The interviews were submitted to Content Analysis, adopting the theme as the central unit. We conclude that the participants of the study presented subjective perception, in relation to Quality of Life, from good to very good. The practice of surfing was considered a positive factor for the participants’ Quality of Life, influencing predominantly in the psychological, environmental and social domains.
