The organizational learning has been recognized as crucial strategy for contemporary organizations - public and private ones- that seek to carry out their activities effectively and efficiently. Among the studies concerning to learning process, there are those on the Communidade de Prática (CoP), a term introduced in the literature in 1991 by Lave and Wenger, and from which the origin lies in the social learning theory. This study was carried out to understand the way the learning process of the Diretoria de Tecnologia da Informação occurs in a Federal University on northern region, as analyzing if the means used in learning to present the characteristics of a community of practice, as compared with other possible group arrangements, under the light of Wenger´s definition. To prove the existence of the community of practice, it is assumed that it presents the dimensions: engagement, reflection and alignment. The case study was the method used to develop the exploratory research.
