Production, chemical components, and content of bioactive compounds of strawberry cultivars

The number of cultivars available in Brazil is small and all of them come from North America. Prior evaluation in Brazilian soils is extremely important, as they are created for completely different environments. The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield, chemical quality and content of bioactive compounds of strawberry cultivars produced in the edaphoclimatic conditions of Pelotas-RS. The experiment was conducted on a transparent plastic tunnel ground in 2011 and 2012. The cultivars Camarosa, Camino Real, Festival, Aromas, Albion, San Andreas, Portola, Monterey and Palomar were evaluated, in 2011 and 2012. The adopted statistical design was a completely randomized block with eight treatments (cultivars) and four replications. Soluble solids, tritimetric acidity, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin content, phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity was quantified to evaluate strawberry quality. The genotype and harvest month factors influence the quality of the fruits as soluble solids, acidity, ascorbic acid and the content of bioactive compounds. Among the cultivars, Palomar and Aromas stand out for ascorbic acid content. Camorosa was the stand out production, stand out under the production aspect, anthocyanin content, phenolic compounds and soluble solids.
