Abstract

This study aimed to compare the main water quality parameters and the Water Quality Index (WQINSF) of four locations under different land use influences and between the dry and rainy periods on the Paraíba do Sul River, in the state of Rio of January. The following quality parameters were evaluated: total phosphorus (TP), nitrate (NO3-), dissolved oxygen (DO), hydrogen potential (pH), turbidity (Turb), thermotolerant coliforms (Col), total dissolved solids (TDS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), water temperature (Twater) and air (Tair), in addition to the WQINSF. Some water quality parameters and WQINSF were different between seasons, with land use being the main factor for this difference. Significant statistical differences in the concentrations of pollutants were observed between the dry and rainy periods, with the concentration of rainfall being effective in the behavior of pollutants and in the WQINSF. In the rainy season, runoff was the main pollution factor, contributing to higher TP, Col, Turb, TDS, Twater and Tair. In the dry period, NO3- and DO showed higher concentrations. The WQINSF was statistically higher in the dry period, although, for most cases, the stretches provided on the Paraíba do Sul River have been classified in the middle class of water quality for both periods.
